Personal statement: Since my appointment to Rotherham Hospital Accident & Emergency department, my main objective has been to strive to improve the service. Principally this has been a matter of raising quality standards by improving the education of junior medical and nursing staff, introducing a system of audit (quality control) and ensuring that systems are in place to deal appropriately firstly with the reception and resuscitation of the severely ill or injured and secondly for managing those with less urgent conditions.

Three concepts have been key to this work. Firstly, maintaining the flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances – both in the short term, with rapidly varying case load and in the long term with many different external pressures brought to bear on the department. Secondly, keeping up to date with scientific advances, both on a personal and departmental level. Thirdly, working closely with colleagues in other departments, particularly orthopaedics, general medicine and radiology as no A&E department exists in isolation.
